Recognized around the world for its innovative thermal retention accomplishments, Vesture® Corporation has been manufacturing portable heating and cooling products to enhance the lives of its clients since 1986.
Using its patented technology known as Microcore®, Vesture® has empowered a widespread array of products to store thermal energy much like a battery and release it when needed most to allow hot or cold food delivery, warm chilly joints and feet and even slow the “glistening effect” that happens on a hot summer day!
Microcore® is packaged in a variety of materials and used in products like LavaBuns® “The Best Seat in the House” portable seat cushions, the Bait Locker™ iceless fishing freezer, Hot or Cold Catering Bags, microwaveable Hot and Cold Pacs, LavaPac® and Lava Pad microwavable heating pads, the new Pet Cloud dog / cat beds, LavaBooties® the ultimate feet warmers, the Tail-Gator™ and Casserole Crib picnic baskets that keep food oven- or freezer-fresh for hours!
The engineering behind Microcore® has been the driving force of many other unique thermal innovations, such as, MicroIce™ (a re-usable, flexible ice alternative), the Stadium Bag 24 pizza carrier, the Pizza Pal™ carry-out wonder, Oven Tech™ a cordless hot plate, V-Touch, Powertech aka “the electric lava pac”, the Mini Sports Sauna and the D/C Heat System , Induction and QuickHeat pizza delivery systems.
Vesture® has invented and/or co-developed items for Corning’s Pyrex Portables®, Chick-fil-A, Pizza Hut, Papa John’s, Donato’s Pizza, just to name a few. Passionately continuing in its mission to be the leader in thermal breakthroughs, Vesture® presses into tomorrow in the fields of commercial food delivery, healthcare, sporting goods, housewares, ad-specialty (ASI), sports medicine, perishable goods, gel pack and many others.
Vesture Corporation is located at 120 East Pritchard Street in the city of Asheboro, North Carolina. The company was founded in 1986 as a vision of two young men, Byron Owens & Gary Hyatt, who wanted to revolutionize the thermal retention industry. They accomplished this by brainstorming and perfecting an idea they called Microcore®.
Since then, Microcore® technology has been packaged in products such as Lava Buns®, LavaBooties®, Kool ' N ' It™ beach blanket, LavaPac®, Catering Bags, Pizza Bags, PizzaPal™, Stadium Bag, Powertech®, Hot and Cold Pacs, Picnic baskets, Oven Tech™, Lava Buns®, the Induction System, the D/C Heat System™, V-Touch™ and the QuickHeat™ System.

Meet the Directors
Jim McColgin- CEO

James (Jim) McColgin is CEO Of Phase Change Energy Solutions. He earned a bachelor’s degree in geophysics
from Texas A&M University in 1973 and a master’s degree in management from
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1989. Mr. McColgin joined Conoco in 1973 and filled
various assignments related to the company’s U.S. and international exploration
activities. Jim became general
manager of planning and administration for North American exploration and
production operations headquartered in Houston in 1986, then moved to Calgary
in 1989 as president of Conoco Canada Limited. In 1991, again in Houston, he was made general manager with
responsibility for reserve acquisitions and asset management for Conoco. He became general manager of strategy and
portfolio management for the company’s exploration and production segment in
1993. Mr. McColgin was named president and
general manager of Conoco Indonesia Inc. and moved to Jakarta in 1997. In 2000, he was named president of Africa,
Asia and Middle East for Conoco. In
2002, Jim became president of ConocoPhillips U.S.A. Lower 48 and Latin
American Region and became a corporate vice-president of ConocoPhillips Inc. In 2003, he was named vice-president of
Exploration, Global Gas and Business Development. In this role he was responsible for the
company’s worldwide new growth and reserve replacement activities. In July of 2005 he moved to Singapore to
become president of ConocoPhillips Asia Pacific Region which encompassed the
company’s operations extending from China through Australia. Jim retired from ConocoPhillips in 2008. Mr. McColgin is on the board of directors for
Asia Pacific Exploration Consolidated, Inc. and is an active member of the Society
of Exploration Geophysicists and the American Association of Petroleum
Geologists.
Jim brings extensive business development, operational, planning
and global managerial experience to the company.

Byron Owens- President

Byron Owens is the co-founder of Vesture Corporation. He was raised on a farm in North Carolina and
began his professional career serving in the United States Air Force. While there he learned a variety of technical
skills, focusing on electronics. As a
passionate entrepreneur, Mr. Owens’ ventures included founding Carolina
Satellite, one of the first C-Band satellite television retail companies in
central North Carolina. During the early
1980’s he helped start a solar heat and domestic hot water manufacturing
company and worked as an executive helping to incubate a printing company into
a multi-million dollar enterprise. In
1987, he co-founded Vesture Corporation, a leading provider of thermal-based
products. Under Mr. Owens’ leadership,
Vesture pioneered a number of new technologies and unique applications. During the past 20 years the company has
generated sales in excess of $100 million, and earned recognition along the way
including a Fortune 500 company’s “best brand promotional launch” and “supplier
of the year” awards. Byron Owens is
recognized in Who’s Who of American Businesses and is an accomplished inventor
and recipient of over 20 U.S. and foreign patents. He focuses his time on product innovations
and maintains a core belief that we cannot stop improving and making our lives
safer and more secure.
Byron is taking the lead in converting ideas into final products that can be easily manufactured. He is responsible for product manufacturing and quality control as well as taking a very active role in new product development.

Jeff Cox- Executive VP / Secretary / Treasurer

Jeff Cox is a veteran of the advertising industry, with over 30
years of experience in this field. After
college graduation with a degree in marketing and communication, Mr. Cox worked
as creative director for two large advertising firms for nine years. In 1984, he started his own firm, growing it into a
multi-million dollar business with over 25 years of profitable
operations. The firm specialized in
marketing primarily to the home furnishings industry. Clients included home furnishing giants such
as Lane Home Furnishings, Broyhill, Thomasville, Bassett,
Henredon, Drexel Heritage and many other well-known clients. Mr. Cox’s forte has been managing targeted
promotional campaigns geared towards audiences of hundreds of millions in a cost-effective
manner. In 2005, Mr. Cox acquired an
equity position in Vesture Corporation, joining forces with long-time friend
and client Byron Owens. Serving as
Executive Vice-President / Secretary / Treasurer, Mr. Cox oversees the daily operations of the company, where his
management skills provide guidance and direction in the manufacturing and
financial aspects of the day-to-day operations. His years of experience and wide-ranging knowledge of practical design
application help in solving product design issues and contributes in providing
solutions to the manufacturing processes.
Jeff brings considerable marketing, product development and practical manufacturing experience to the company.

Peter Horwath- Executive VP

Pete Horwath, earned a degree in Physics and Computer Science from
Mary Washington University. Mr. Horwath
also earned on FAA Airframe and Power Plant license, a private pilot’s license
and has applied for several provisional patents in the Aerospace, Security and
Defense industries. Mr. Horwath has a
wide variety of entrepreneurial experience including owning and operating a
successful construction company in Fairfax, Virginia where he became the
youngest associate member of the Northern Virginia Building Industry
Association. He also started and sold a
successful computer firm that was awarded several large contracts that
developed computer systems for local school systems, several federal government
agencies, as well as financial and medical software companies. Prior to founding Phase Change Energy Solutions, Inc., Peter was Vice President of Operations at TG&C
Associates, a consulting firm working on the development of innovative
solutions in the Defense and Energy industries.
Pete is the innovator of using low cost, bio-based phase change
materials in building applications and was responsible for the founding of
Phase Change Energy Solutions. Pete is
actively involved in product optimization, testing, modeling and in developing
new commercial uses for phase change materials. |
Reyad Sawafta, Ph. D. - Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Reyad Sawafta is the president and chief executive officer of Quartek Corporation, a privately-held nanotechnology company that he founded in 2004. In his role, he oversees a myriad of business functions, keeps abreast on new developments in science and technology, devotes attention to the complexities associated with research and development, and continues to apply his innate drive and amition to foster a nrgiht and prosperous future for QuarTek Corporation. Prior to founding QuarTek Corporation, he held various positions of increasing responsibility in academia and private industry. Dr. Sawafta has served on numerous national and international advisory committees and boards d has received many prestigious awards. His expertise includes nuclear physics, high speed technology, magnetic applications and designs, biotechnology and nanotechnology. Dr. Sawafta obtained his Ph.D. in Nuclear Physics from the University of Alberta, Canada in 1986 and a B.Sc. in Physics (1980) from Yarmouk University in Jordan. Dr. Sawafta is an inventor on numerous patents and patent applications; he has also suthored more than 150 scientific papers and has presented more than 100 invited talks worldwide.

Dixon Johnston - Director

Dixon Johnston, is a member of the board of directors of Phase Change Energy Solutions and a business advisor to the managers of the company. Mr. Johnson is currently the EVP of QuarTek Corporation. Mr. Johnston brings considerable executive level management experience in product development and commercialization derived from holding senior level positions with Proctor & Gamble and Clorox, including General Manager, Clorox of Canada, and most recently as President of Alba-Waldensian. He served as an Officer in the Navy during Vietnam. Mr. Johnston holds a B.S. degree in Economics from Northwestern University and an MBA in Finance from The University of California at Berkeley.
